The buildings on either side of the road left little room for escape. They seemed to be hemming a young girl who was running for her life, followed by two weird-looking midgets who ran on all-fours. Her eyes sought many a time for a way to turn and lose her pursuers once she reached the crowded portions of the town, but there was none available to her. The road ahead ran into a brick wall. A dead end, she cursed, but she dared not stop. Only a few minutes ago these midgets had jumped on an old lady and bit her neck and legs, almost taking out her entrails. Had she not stopped them, they would have mutilated her corpse. But that had turned out to be her undoing. The midgets had turned their attention to her and started to smell her. She had found it weird but when they hissed, she had run like the Devil himself was behind her.
Fear rendered her heart pacing faster. Sweat trickled down her brows, her forehead creased in tension. What were the midgets? They seemed like no ordinary men, although they had human form. From what she had gathered of the old lady, they had drained her of her blood. She had found it gross. She had half a doubt that these midgets were vampires or cannibals.
A strand of her black hair obscured her vision; she waved it away, irritated. She stopped, breathed once deeply, before moving to her left into a tenement building that seemed to be the only route she could take. Perhaps she could hide in one of the apartments. If only she could lose the midgets somehow...they were quite close and she did not like it. She won prizes for sprinting and running races; she had been fast. Yet these foul vermin had come quite close. Any longer she would have run on the road, she would be overtaken and then fair game for these dwarf-like men.
